Chapter 24

5th January 2023

Bobby took the Qatar Airways flight from Delhi to Heathrow. After a four hour stop over, he boarded the Virgin Atlantic to Sau Paulo. A few glasses of liquor followed by a reasonably good dinner, he closed his eyes as his mind went to Smrithi.

He had called her the night before and he knew that she was falling in love with him. Over the next few hours, she talked at length about the lack of any breakthroughs in finding Shone. Bobby heard her outbursts patiently, since he knew that all she had was him; to pour out her frustration, anger, and the fear of losing Shone forever.

But little did she know that the course of this investigation had gone to the next level.

Though he wished to tell her the real truth of what he felt deep down, he could never muster the courage.

Perhaps he felt the truth would kill her.

He took a deep breath and diverted the conversation promising to meet her the following week.

Once he landed at the Sao Paulo international airport at 8.20 pm, he took a taxi to the Intercontinental hotel which was near the airport and checked into room no 409. The next day morning he took a taxi to downtown Sao Paulo and got lost in the crowd.

A short while later, he walked into Vila Olympia, one of the well-known contemporary multi-level shopping malls. It had a variety of brand name stores, a food supermarket, restaurants and a multiplex. He smiled to himself as he changed his clothes in the dressing room of one of the stores, paid by cash and walked out through the back exit. Fifteen minutes later, he was in the Range Rover, which he had booked the previous day driving towards the southwestern mountain jungles.
